The One That Got Away by Kenny Loggins

"As what people said, music speaks what cannot be expressed. Writing a song is a way to express our feelings to someone that we failed to say."

Kenny Loggins is one of the famous American singer and song writer. His songs are always about his feelings on his family. He is always writing a song that would talk about what is happening in his life. His album, It's About Time was released in 2003. It has 10 tracks and one of it is, The One That Got Away.

The One That Got Away is about a father and son. It seems like the father did something wrong to his son and his son fails to forgive him. He left his son because it was the right thing to do, but it was stated there that he wasn't happy at all. He just did that because it was the right thing to do, even though he don't want to. Its lyrics', Don't ever think I didn't want you, was referring to his son's thought that maybe his father left him because he didn't like him. Perhaps, he didn't love him.

How do we catch up, Is there just too much, Stolen history - this line shows that the father is missing his son so much and he don't know what to do to catch up with him. He wanted to catch up with his son but he can't. The things that they would've done were stolen. As a father, seeing your son that is very distant to you hurts so much. As the lyrics goes on, it states that, No matter where life takes you, know that I'll still be waiting patiently, For the day that you've forgiven me - no matter what will happen to his son, he'll love him forever, and he's willing to wait for the day to come that he's already forgiven.

This song shows that the parents can't tolerate their child. Your child might do something against you but still, you can't stay mad at them. The moment when your child gets mad at you it'll bothers you all the time. You wanted to say sorry, but they can't forgive you. Even the situation is like that, you still do not lose hope that someday you will get along.

When I first heard this song, the first person came up to my mind was my dad. Like what the song was trying to imply, I can see the situation in Kenny Loggins' song was same as mine. When I was young, there was a time that dad did something that made me hate him. I really hate him for doing such thing. I can't forgive him because of what he has done. I was too young back then and I'm not thinking what was the reason for him to do that. But now, I understand. There are things in this world that are better left unsaid, because we will never understand the reason why. And sometimes, what's left unsaid says it all.

The poetry of this song expressed strong feelings and emotions. It symbolizes family - love of parents to their children. He used the phrase seperate houses, as an image of a family in every houses. The theme of it shows the feelings of the author. He used simple words so that the readers/listeners easy to understand the message of the song.

Kenny Loggins is such a great and creative composer. He writes songs about his life and his feelings, and he's always dedicating his songs to someone who seems special to him. His first song album was entitled Celebrate Me Home, in 1977 and followed up in 1978 with Nightwatch. He wrote a song for his father who serves as an inspiration to him.

His songs are very inspirational 'cause it taught some lessons in life. You can see Kenny Loggins' journey in life through his songs.
